Silver umbrellas are used to bounce light onto a subject. They provide softening, with a harder shadow than a regular white umbrella. Light loss is usually ~1.5 f/stop compared to the same light used direct, bare light. The black backing cuts down on stray light.

The Westcott 2002 Collapsible Soft Silver Umbrella provides quick and easy light softening with a slightly harder look than a white umbrella. This umbrella has a unique design that allows it to collapse into a very compact package that fits easily into a location case.
